My First Shed

My ex-husband is a carpenter. He was always building something useful to use at our home. He had that good trait going for him. Our first shed was built by him and was one of the cute little wooden sheds that looked like a small barn. He learned how to build that particular type of shed back in 1981 when he was in 'trade school' as it was called back then. An adorable shed that matched the siding of our home, I loved it and planted herbs along the side.

We've since moved away from that first shed, but I look back every now and then at photos and relive fond memories of those days.

What You Need in Order to Build a Shed Cheap

So you want, no I mean, NEED a shed. The problem is you're low on funds for getting the project done. There are a few things you'll need to know to build a shed cheap and on your own.

#1. What do you need the shed for anyway? Storage, or do you plan to make it as a garden shed as well? Decide on its size, consulting first the area where you plan to put your shed.

Make sure that the area is free from any underground cables, wirings, or pipes. This will ensure that the shed will not act as a hindrance if there are repairs to be done.

When you're done with the planning stage, make an estimate of the materials and the tools you will need. Most of the time the materials and tools are wood, nails, roofing, hinges, cement, sand, hammer, tape, saws, and screws.

Start from the bottom and work your way up. Make sure that your foundation is level. Nail your floor properly to the foundation blocks. After the floor, make the frame for your walls and then for the roof. Make provisions for your windows. Pre-fabricated kits can make the job easier, but it can much more costly.

There are many books and websites which can help you do your plans, there are even ready made plans which you can just customize to achieve the desired size. Also, doing the frames can be consulted with carpentry books; here you can learn the different styles to ensure that you will be able to create a sturdy frame, in some localities, it is necessary to obtain a permit first before building a shed, consult your local government first.

After building your shed, you can now do the finishing touches. Create shelves and cabinets, and you can even varnish or paint your shed to make it look lovelier in your garden, and not an eyesore.
